What is osteitis deformans?

Osteitis deformans, also known as Paget's disease of bone, is a chronic disorder that affects the normal bone remodeling process. It is characterized by abnormal bone growth that leads to bone deformities, thickened and enlarged bones, and increased risk of fractures.

The cause of osteitis deformans is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors that cause abnormal bone cell behavior. Symptoms may include bone pain, joint pain, deformity, increased head size, hearing loss, and nerve damage.

Diagnosis is made through physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies such as X-rays and bone scans. Treatment may include medications to control bone growth and manage pain, physical therapy, and surgery for severe cases.

While osteitis deformans is a chronic condition, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.
